How to call Germany lists several major area codes and shows that when dialing you start with 011 to get out of North America then add 49 for Germany then dial the phone number, without the leading zero (that last bit is important).

wikipedia will give the dialing code per region, for example 06187 for Schöneck, Hesse. will let you reverse lookup numbers like +49-6187-1111 (note that the leading zero is omitted). will let you lookup a person by last name and city, like Müller in Schöneck Hess.
