Registering a Charity

Registered Charities must fall into the following categories:

  • the relief of poverty
  • the advancement of education
  • the advancement of religion
  • benefit the community in a way the courts have said are charitable

Obligations of Registration

To register a charity you must complete a T2050 which requires the following. For help completing this form see T4063.

  • name
  • address
  • constitution (or other governing document) which must must identify the purposes for which the organization is established and describe its structure and internal procedures. A constitution must contain:
    • organization's name
    • organization's purpose
    • a provision stating that the organization will be operated without purpose of gain for its members, and that any profits or other assets of the organization will be used solely to promote its objectives
    • the structure of the organization's governing body
    • a provision that explains how the organization will replace its directors (for example, annual election by members, appointment by existing directors, etc.)
    • date of the constitution
    • signatures of at least three of the organization's directors
