Iceland (part4)

Iceland Iceland

For the full story, see parts one, two, three, and four. For other options, see Planning Iceland.

This morning was the best weather we'd seen all trip. You could almost wear a t-shirt. We were tuckered out from the long trip but the good weather was invigorating.

We stopped at the Saga Centre on the way out of town, which was really cool. It starts out giving context for the sagas and has many artifacts on display then summarizes the Saga of Brennu-Njáll with text and images. Basically it's an escalating shepherd's blood feud.

The Saga Centre has some interesting artifacts and an adjoining art gallery, museum and restaurant.

After the Saga Centre we drove back to Reykjavik through the golden circle, stopping at a the Kerið Crater for photos, for which we still had good weather.

Later when we stopped near the ancient parliament gathering location for lunch. The weather had gone back to cold driving rain. Also on the drive we saw the region where the Atlantic and European tectonic plates are separating.

Back in Reykjavik we checked into hotel Floki (now Hostel Village) and had a snack and a nap. Then we walked downtown, window shopping in mild rain

We stopped at a kebab house Tyner and Cynthia had found during their time in Reykjavik . It was delicious.

The rain had mostly stopped after dinner, so we took a circuitous route back to the hotel, stopping at several shops along the way.

Reykjavik is a fantastic city. In good weather and with lots of money, I could have a great time there.

Back at the hotel I asked the attendant about parking, then he overheard us mention Dominion, so I showed him the travel box Amanda's dad had made for us. Then we played a few games in the common area, and later he (Osker) joined us for a few games.

Back at the room I stress-packed most of our gear for the plane, and finally went to sleep after 1am. I'm still amazed that I managed to shove all that wool into our already full luggage.

Next morning we woke at 7am and lounged around before breakfast. Then I wrote up my journal. We walked downtown again and had a delicious crepe before driving to the airport. The rental car drop-off was achieved by leaving it in the airport parking lot, unlocked with the keys in the glove box. There was construction in the terminal which made it crowded.

After the trip I separated my gear into stuff not worth bringing (in some cases not even used) and the gear that mattered. I think about 75% of what I brought was useful. Here's the list.
