My mom had heard of a scenic train ride to the Agawa Canyon from Sault Ste. Marie, so we (Mom, dad, Chris, Amanda and I) finally bit the bullet and drove out there. The drive is a bit taxing, but we had a good book on tape about the history of coal, and we swapped drivers frequently.
We drove Ottawa to Huntsville and slept. The next morning we drove all the way to Sault Ste. Marie in one long haul. We stopped for a break on the water somewhere along the way.
Our hotel was right next to the train track and we had breakfast on the train. It was a fun experience and the staff on the train were extraordinarily friendly, but I don't think the scenery is any more attractive than Algonquin park.
On the way to the canyon you pass over a hydro-electric dam which was impressive, and at the canyon there is a lookout to climb. That was fun.
After the train ride and dinner, we drove to Sudbury but the highway hotels were full so we had to be lost downtown for a while before finally going to bed. Sunday was Sudbury to Huntsville to Ottawa. Quite the drive.
